Imagine a Moor palace with spires, an internal architecture that reflects the stately home of an emirate:
elegant damask engravings, horse shoe arches, turquoise fresco painted ceilings resembling the mosques of the magic Orient.
Gazing at this fascinating palace, we perceive neither sand dunes nor the aromas and colours of an Oriental bazaar, but another magical setting appears clearly through the larch woods:
that of Lake Orta.
We are in heart of Piedmont, not far from Malpensa, Milan’s International Airport, and this fairy-like villa, which seems to have magically been transported from the scenes of the Arabian knights, is in fact the realisation of a dream by someone who loved the irresistible beauty of the Orient.
Cristoforo Benigno Crespi - Busto Arsizio-born - became a successful trader in cotton with the aid of a broker friend, buying and selling in Persia. Charmed by Baghdad, in 1879, he built a Moor villa on land near the lake where he had spent his childhood and where he had recovered from tisi.
