 TOURISM in SOVICILLE Sovicille is set on the national road SS nr 73 which joins Siena to Massa Marittima and Follonica. Sovicille has a mainly hilly territory, which it varies from 200 to 618 meters and it is one of the most extended commons in the Province of Siena. Sovicille is distant approximately 10 km from Siena and the most renown fraction is that one of San Rocco in Pilli, where there is the gracious Residence San Lorenzo in the hamlet of Linari, which is much demanded under the tourist profile for its avant-garde modern center of the Wellbeing. In the last decades the borough of San Rocco in Pilli extended along the slopes of the hill, dominated by the beautiful bell-tower of the church of San Bartolomeo. In origin the borough had developed along the old Etruscan road which connected Siena to Poggio Civitate and Roselle, close to Grosseto. It was indeed the 'confraternita di San Rocco', made up in 1561 for will of the inhabitants of the place, to give the name to the 'contrada'. The church of San Bartolomeo erges in the higher zone of San Rocco. Of medieval origin, it was enlarged with the baptismal source, becoming a 'Pieve' (Parrish church) but with a rather penible history. The church had been built on a friable ground and, during the time, it had to be subjected to varied closings and of many restorations. In 1824 the church was reconstituted by account from the d'Elci family, a noble ones which lived in the neighbor Villa di Cavaglioni, on drawing of the architect Agostino Fantastici. Later on other restorings were made necessary and even in the last years. Currently the Church of San Bartolomeo was again reopen for the worship. Pilli is a small fraction of Sovicille which praised a medieval castle and the Pieve di Santa Maria in Pilli. Though today one can still see some small trace of the castle in both small Romaneques windows with arc brick in a building of the village, of the Pieve did not remain any traces, and it is a true shame that the time had striped them all. |
