 TOURISM in EMPOLIThe city of Empoli is famous for the clothing production and it still conserves some features of the city walls dating back to the XV century, in the historical center and some other buildings that deserve a particular attention like the characteristic Collegiata di S. Andrea a church in Romanesque style in the lower part and in Gothic-Romanesque style part in the upper part. In the annexed Museum of the Collegiata are exposed valuable art works of Tuscan painters of the three and four hundred, among which there is a Christ in mercy by Masolino da Panicale and a Madonna by Filippo Lippi. In the XIII hundred Church of S. Stefano are found valuable frescoes executed after the 1424 by Masolino and the 'capolavoro' of the sculptor Bernardo Rossellino, the Annunciation (a masterpiece dating back to the half of the XV century). The Valdarno Inferiore is the most densely popolated zone in Tuscany, where the greater part of the productive activities are concentrated: the industries of the glass, terracotta and ceramics are typical of the Empolese lower Arno river valley - the wood workings in Cascina and the leather working in Santa Croce sull'Arno. In spite of the centuries, the territory has maintained its 'centralità' in the life style of the region, also tracing only partially the terms that rendered it in the Middle Ages a crucial territory, in how much director of support regarding to the Francigena Way. In the outskirtses of Empoli numerous interesting takeovers are found, like the characteristic circular village of Cerreto Guidi surpassed from the Medicea Villa, built up between 1565 and 1567. The colossal ramps were planned by Bernardo Buontalenti. Vinci is the native country of Leonardo (1452-1519) and the house is situated in the fraction of Anchiano. In the Castle of the Guidi the Leonardiano Museum is prepared while in the basements are found the collections of the ideal Museum Leonardo da Vinci with beyond 200 works and objects of the great renaissance genius. The castle of the Guidi counts dates back to the XII century and it introduces a singular almond shaped plant. The village of Montelupo Fiorentino was famous already since the Middle Ages for the production of valuable ceramics, pieces of great value are visible in the Archaeological and the Ceramics Museum, prepared in the Podestà palace. The hamlet was encircled by the Florentine walls in 1203 and it deserves a visit to the pieve di S. Giovanni Evangelista with inside a valuable table of the Botticelli school, and the prioria of S. Lorenzo, with the cycle of frescoes of the XIII century. In the vicinities there is the 'villa medicea' said the Ambrogiana, planned by Bernardo Buontalenti in a square plant and today used as an hospital. |
