 TOURISM in CORTONA Going amid hills and plains in the Valdichiana, one cannot miss to visit Cortona this beautiful city suspended on the green valley and that it dominates from its fortress over the hills and fields that look neverending. But already in the Middle Ages the scenary had changed, so that Dante remembered so terrified, in the 1200's the stench from the tinning waters and, at the end of the 1400's, Leonardo da Vinci represented the lacustrine mirror in the Atlantic Code. The nowadays variegated landscape is the fruit of the participations defined 1800's-1900's that have put to culture wraps of plain lands leaving the characteristic small farms. Around the plate valley line, where the motorway and the railroad run, amid fields of cereals and industrial cultures, the ecological pictures change quickly: forests and castles in the mountainside, vineyards and olive groves in the genle hillside undulations on which lie down the medieval villages. Vadichiana has sweet profiles and ample serene panoramas, that they seem to penetrate in the alleys and squares in an ideal fusion between city and country. In Cortona the luminous landscape of the Valdichiana burst unexpected into, from the parvis of the churches and in the alleys that slope down, amid the serene stone palaces forming a fascinating and evocative scene, almost an announcement of the great monumental and artistic patrimony that the city encircles. |
